ARZone Intersectionality Interview 20 – Joe Brydon

Episode 20 features long-time activist Joe Brydon.

Joe Brydon has been engaged in activism of one form or another for as long as they can remember, primarily involved with disarmament and anti-war campaigns, with brief forays into anti-fracking and anti-nuclear escapades. Growing up gay in a very heterosexual world has helped Joe realise the importance of intersectionality in each of these campaigns. They are involved in a number of groups promoting greater understanding of LGBTQ+ issues within other communities and campaigns, such as Bristol Against Pinkwashing, and the Quaker Lesbian and Gay Fellowship. An interest in animal rights developed about two years ago when Joe finally went vegan. Joe is now an active member of the Animal Alliance, a vegan outreach group based in Brighton. ARZone Intersectionality Interview 3 - Aph Ko

Episode 3 features Aph Ko an intersectional vegan feminist, anti-racist activist and writer. Aph founded the website www.blackvegansrock.com after producing the first list of 100 influential Black vegans, and is also the founder of http://aphro-ism.com, a website that provides critical analysis through a black vegan feminist framework. Aph focuses on how intersectionality is a useful tool for navigating current oppressive systems, and how the concept of Afrofuturism is a brilliant tool for creating conceptual blueprints for tomorrow. Episode 2 features Sebastian, a staff writer at Vegan Publishers, part-time lecturer on speciesism at Columbia University, and volunteer coordinator for VINE Sanctuary. 

Focused in his work mostly on examining the complex relationships between speciesism, racism, and queer oppression, Sebastian speaks with ARZone about how Intersectionality can be used as a lens through which we can understand others as individuals. He also talks about whether or not veganism is “easy”, and what that means, as well as how we may be able to influence other progressive social movements to adopt an anti-speciesist position. For his efforts to promote animal rights and protect the environment, Ari was awarded with PETA's "Compassionate Company" Proggy Award.

ARZone Podcast 45: Marc Bekoff

An interview with Marc Bekoff, world renowned animal behaviorist, biologist, author (Animals Matter) and advocate for other animals.

Marc talks about the need to connect hearts and minds by "rewilding" ourselves, his ideas about compassionate conservation, what we know about the minds of other animals, and how the way forward for other animals is for human advocates to stop their bickering and learn to work for a common purpose.

Prof. Bekoff is a former Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, a Fellow of the Animal Behavior Society and a past Guggenheim Fellow. His main areas of research include animal behavior, cognitive ethology (which is the study of animal minds), and behavioral ecology; Marc has also published extensively on the need to change how humans regard, treat and use other animals. Named to the advisory board of GreenVegans in 2010, Marc has served as an advisor or board member to numerous organizations throughout his career, including as co-founder with Jane Goodall of Ethologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Marc has published more than 300 essays (both scholarly and for mass media) and 22 books, including Species of mind: The philosophy and biology of cognitive ethology (with Colin Allen) and the Encyclopedia of animal rights and animal welfare. Professor Bekoff has appeared on national and international television programs, and has been published in major newspapers and magazines. He currently writes a popular column called Animal Emotions for Psychology Today. 

In 1986 Marc became the first American to win his age-class at the Tour du Var bicycle race (also called the Master's … or age-graded Tour de France).

It’s safe to say that Prof. Bekoff is a recognized expert in animal cognition and behavior, and a trusted voice both inside and outside of the animal advocacy community.

ARZone Podcast #40 features special guest Cameron Blewett, a vegan advocate from Brisbane, Australia, who, after spending many years as an avid hunter, has now been vegan for almost 20 years!

Cameron served in the Australian Army Reserves and has also advocated for the rights of workers within the Trade Union Movement.  He is a keen writer  (see here).

Most recently Cam has made the decision to run for a Senate Seat in the upcoming Australian Federal Election as an independent candidate for Queensland, campaigning on issues which are important to the ethics of veganism and the environment.

Rae and JC have each been advocates and educators for more 30 years.

Rae Sikora is a co-founder of the Institute for Humane Education, working to help develop critical thinking skills and awareness about human health, the global environment, and justice for other animals.

JC Corcoran is a retired fire captain and paramedic. He holds a degree in Emergency Medicine. He has founded a number of organizations and has used his medical training and fitness background to help others see that the ways in which we use other animals affects us as well as them.

Together, Rae and JC have founded vegan-based Plant Peace Daily, and have written a new book by that name.
