ARZone Podcast 87: Nick Cooney - How to be Great at Doing Good

Episode 87 features Nick Cooney.

Nick Cooney is Director of Education at Mercy For Animals, a national nonprofit animal protection organization and he’s founder of The Humane League. His work has been featured in hundreds of media outlets, and he’s lectured extensively throughout the United States and Europe.

He is the author of three books: Change Of Heart: What Psychology Can Teach Us About Spreading Social Change (2010), Veganomics: The Surprising Science on What Motivates Vegetarians, from the Breakfast Table to the Bedroom (2013), and his latest - and the subject of this interview - How to be Great at Doing Good (2015).

Nick speaks with us about that book, about the ways the organizations he's involved with have tried to implement the ideas in it, and what he hopes for the future of charitable giving in general and the animal protection movement in particular. Audio podcast, approx 38 mins.

Since 2005 Paul Shapiro has been the Vice President for Farm Animal Protection for the Humane Society of the United States. Prior to joining the HSUS, Paul was, for 10 years, the founder and campaigns director of Compassion Over Killing, a group he initially began while still in high school.

Paul joins us today to speak about what he learned from 10 years in grassroots activism, the role of the HSUS in the animal rights movement and some of the controversy surrounding it, and how advocates and activists can be most effective for other animals. Audio podcast, approx. 72 minutes.

In 1993, Matt co-founded Vegan Outreach; where he served as the group’s Executive Director for more than 20 years. In recognition for his dedication to the cause of reducing the suffering of other animals, in 2005 Matt was inducted into the Animal Rights Hall of Fame. He is the author of two books, The Animal Activist’s Handbook (with Bruce Friedrich in 2007) and, in 2014, The Accidental Activist. Matt has also written countless essays, attended an untold number of conferences and workshops, and spoken to audiences everywhere about the plight of other animals and the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle.

Rob Garner is professor of political theory at the University of Leicester in the UK who has, for more than two decades, specialised in animal rights.

In this interview, Prof. Garner speaks with ARZone about his recently published book A Theory of Justice for Animals. He explains why Animal Welfare fails to protect the interests of other animals, why "species egalitarianism" (or abolitionism) will not achieve its goals, and why conceiving of animal rights as a political matter of justice affords us the best chance at creating a better world for animals. Rob Garner obtained his BA from the University of Salford and his MA and PhD from the University of Manchester. A professor at the University of Leicester, the focus of his principal research interest has been on the political representation of nonhuman interests. He is the author of 6 books in this area, including A Theory of Justice for Animals (2013), The Animal Rights Debate: Abolition or Regulation?(2010, with Professor Gary Francione), Animal Ethics (2005), The Political Theory of Animal Rights (2005), Animals, Politics and Morality (2004) and Environmental Politics: Britian, Europe and The Global Environment (2000).

Episode 56 features ethologist, author, public speaker and vegan advocate, Dr. Jonathan Balcombe.  

Dr. Balcombe speaks with ARZone about his work with the newly launched Humane Society University, about the Experience of Pleasure and the Elimination of Suffering, as well as about the complex inner lives of fishes, language and communication in other animals, and much more. Dr. Balcombe has three biology degrees, including a PhD in ethology (the study of animal behaviour) from the University of Tennessee. Jonathan has published more than 40 scientific papers on animal behaviour, humane education and animal research. He is also the author of four books, The Use of Animals in Higher Education: Problems, Alternatives and Recommendations, Pleasurable Kingdom: Animals and the Nature of Feeling Good, Second Nature: The Inner Lives of Animals, and The Exultant Ark: A Pictorial Tour of Animal Pleasure. Jonathan was formerly the Senior Research Scientist with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and is currently Chair of the Animal Studies Department with the Humane Society University.

He has campaigned against the use of endangered species in traditional medicines; against whaling and dolphin slaughter; against global warming and mass extinction; and against sport hunting, urban deer culls and seal hunting.

Anthony has traveled the globe as an author, an environmentalist, a speaker and an advocate for other animals.

He is also the author of “Change of Heart: What Psychology Can Teach Us About Spreading Social Change” which VegNews named as one of its top ten books of 2011. Dr. Andrew Knight is an Australian bioethicist and European Veterinary Specialist in Welfare Science, Ethics and Law who lives and practices veterinary medicine in London. He is a Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, the Director of Animal Consultants International, which provides multidisciplinary expertise for animal issues, and he is spokesperson for Animals Count, a British political party for people and animals.

Andrew has produced over 50 scientific publications on animal issues. His key publications include a major series examining the contributions to human health-care of animal experiments. His work has attracted several awards at international scientific conferences, and forms the basis for his 2010 PhD as well as providing the foundations for his 2011 book The Costs and Benefits of Animal Experiments.

Andrew’s other publications have examined the contributions of the livestock sector to climate change, vegan companion animal diets, the animal welfare standards of veterinarians, and the latest evidence about animal cognitive and related abilities and the resultant moral implications.

Farm Animal Rescue will not only be taking in and caring for numerous neglected and “used up” individuals, but will also campaign against other animals being used as commodities at all..

ARZone Podcast 45: Marc Bekoff


An interview with Marc Bekoff, world renowned animal behaviorist, biologist, author (Animals Matter) and advocate for other animals.

Marc talks about the need to connect hearts and minds by "rewilding" ourselves, his ideas about compassionate conservation, what we know about the minds of other animals, and how the way forward for other animals is for human advocates to stop their bickering and learn to work for a common purpose.




Prof. Bekoff is a former Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, a Fellow of the Animal Behavior Society and a past Guggenheim Fellow. His main areas of research include animal behavior, cognitive ethology (which is the study of animal minds), and behavioral ecology; Marc has also published extensively on the need to change how humans regard, treat and use other animals. Named to the advisory board of GreenVegans in 2010, Marc has served as an advisor or board member to numerous organizations throughout his career, including as co-founder with Jane Goodall of Ethologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Marc has published more than 300 essays (both scholarly and for mass media) and 22 books, including Species of mind: The philosophy and biology of cognitive ethology (with Colin Allen) and the Encyclopedia of animal rights and animal welfare. Professor Bekoff has appeared on national and international television programs, and has been published in major newspapers and magazines. He currently writes a popular column called Animal Emotions for Psychology Today. 

In 1986 Marc became the first American to win his age-class at the Tour du Var bicycle race (also called the Master's … or age-graded Tour de France).

It’s safe to say that Prof. Bekoff is a recognized expert in animal cognition and behavior, and a trusted voice both inside and outside of the animal advocacy community.
