ARZone Intersectionality Interview 22 - Julia Feliz

Episode 22 features intersectional vegan activist and author, Julia Feliz.

Julia is an intersectional vegan, an artist and the author of the first ever vegan themed board book for babies and toddlers, Libby Finds Vegan Sanctuary.

Julia runs The Vegan Craftivist Project, which advocates on behalf of other animals through craft, and recently became president of a Swiss based association, Solidarity for Humanity, which aims to provide a platform for marginalized communities, as well as lead US Americans abroad to best fight against oppression.  


Julia has been an ethical vegan since 2008, and is now also a mother who enjoys creating art for her young children and colouring by their side.

Episode 17 features the director of Free from Harm, Robert Grillo.

Robert Grillo is an activist, author and speaker. He is the director of Free from Harm, which he founded in 2009 to expose the effects of animal agriculture on other animals, vulnerable human communities and the environment. With a background in marketing communications, Robert is particularly interested in how popular culture creates the narratives that influence much of our behavior. His book, Farm to Fable: The Fictions of Our Animal-Consuming Culture (Vegan Publishers 2016), was written to explore that theme. Audio podcast, 15 minutes.

Episode 10 features pioneering author Carol J. Adams.

Carol J. Adams has been one of the most inspirational leaders of the animal advocacy movement for decades. She is a writer, speaker, and activist as well as a mentor to countless animal advocates. As well as writing the groundbreaking book, The Sexual Politics of Meat, Carol has authored more than 20 other books, as well as countless articles and essays in magazines, journals and other texts.

Since the 1970’s, Carol’s activism has been deeply involved in the real-world experience of working for social justice – for example against domestic violence, homelessness, racism and violence toward both humans and other animals. Audio podcast, 44 mins.

Aph founded the website www.blackvegansrock.com after producing the first list of 100 influential Black vegans, and is also the founder of http://aphro-ism.com, a website that provides critical analysis through a black vegan feminist framework. Aph focuses on how intersectionality is a useful tool for navigating current oppressive systems, and how the concept of Afrofuturism is a brilliant tool for creating conceptual blueprints for tomorrow. Episode 2 features Sebastian, a staff writer at Vegan Publishers, part-time lecturer on speciesism at Columbia University, and volunteer coordinator for VINE Sanctuary. 

Focused in his work mostly on examining the complex relationships between speciesism, racism, and queer oppression, Sebastian speaks with ARZone about how Intersectionality can be used as a lens through which we can understand others as individuals. He also talks about whether or not veganism is “easy”, and what that means, as well as how we may be able to influence other progressive social movements to adopt an anti-speciesist position. Episode 89 features noted artist and author Ruby Roth.

Ruby Roth, who’s lived vegan since 2003, is an artist, designer, an activist and is the author and illustrator of four vegan books for children: “That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals” (2009), “Vegan is Love: Having Heart and Taking Action” (2012), ”V Is for Vegan: The ABCs of Being Kind” (2013), and most recently “The Help Yourself Cookbook for Kids: 60 Easy Plant-Based Recipes Kids Can Make to Stay Healthy and Save the Earth” (2016).

In addition to her degrees in Art and American Studies, Ruby has researched animal agriculture, health, nutrition, and the benefits of a plant-based diet for nearly a decade. Her books have been featured throughout the world in the press and translated into numerous languages.

Kim Socha, who holds a PhD in English Literature and Criticism, is an English professor working in the US. A grassroots animal liberation advocate, Kim is also active in drug policy reform, and transformative justice.

Kim is the author or editor of 4 books relating to animal rights and veganism including her most recent from 2014, Animal Liberation and Atheism: Dismantling the Procrustean Bed. Prof. Socha joined us to speak about that book, in which she makes the case that adherence to any of the world's major religions is antithetical to an animal liberation perspective and practice. Professor Nibert is also the author of “Animal Rights/Human Rights: Entanglements of Oppression and Liberation”, published in 2002, in which he makes the connection between the exploitation of other animals, and the exploitation, mistreatment and violence against other devalued groups. In his work, David connects animal rights theory with other economic and sociological theories. He believes that speciesism is an ideology that seeks to legitimise animal slavery, perpetuating the oppression of other individuals based solely on their species.

ARZone Podcast 71 features sociologists Kate Stewart and Matthew Cole.

Kate Stewart is a medical sociologist working at the University of Nottingham; Matthew Cole is a sociologist teaching with The Open University. Kate and Matthew speak with ARZone about the work they've done examining how children "learn the difference between animals they eat and animals they love". They discuss how the culture into which children are born shapes who they will become, in particular how popular representations of other animals in movies and their associated promotional tie-in products (especially fast-food "kid's meals") influence children. For the past decade Kate Stewart has had a particular research interest in how information about food is interpreted and applied. This work led to her first collaborative work with Matthew, -- 'The Conceptual Separation of Food and Animals in Childhood', which was published in Food, Culture and Society in 2009. Their first book together, 'Our Children and Other Animals: The Cultural Construction of Human-Animal Interaction in Childhood' will be published by Ashgate early next year.

Matthew Cole has research interests in how the human use of other animals is made to appear normal and acceptable, and in how vegans and veganism are represented (and often misrepresented) in popular culture, for instance in media including television and film.

Al Nowatzki, who, along with his wife, has been vegan for more than 10 years, is an animal rights activist in the US. He’s a stay-at-home dad who helps raise his 6 year old daughter and 4 year old son and blogs about raising them as vegans at These Little Piggies Had Tofu.

Al is a mentor for the Animal Rights Coalition's Vegan University programme, he’s co-facilitated informational workshops for the ARC, and has volunteered doing pay-per-view outreach for them. He's also a coordinator for ARC's family group, VegKins.

Al’s essay "Vegan Parenting: Navigating and Negating Speciesist Media" has been published in the recently released book, Confronting Animal Exploitation, edited by Kim Socha and Sarahjane Blum.
